Living Technologies Ltd (LTL) designs and builds ecological wastewater treatment systems in co-operation with various partner organisations. We work with three main types of Ecological Treatment System:
These technologies are inspired by ecosystems as old as the earth itself. They accelerate nature's own water purification process, and help to conserve and recycle natural resources. Using the principles of ecological engineering, wastewater treatment takes place through a series of tanks and other managed environments, in which a diversity of organisms transform the waste in the water. Unlike conventional systems, they incorporate helpful bacteria, plants, snails and fish that thrive by breaking down and digesting organic pollutants. Depending on the climate, they can be located outdoors, in protective greenhouses, or under light shelter. We offer treatment systems to a variety of clients: municipalities and communities; educational institutions and museums; resorts and residential developments; industry and manufacturing. Often referred to as simply Restorers these are the latest generation of treatment and remediation systems we offer. They are cost-effective to install and run, and are the ideal solution for large scale projects where there is sufficient land available.
Eco-Restorers & Fed Batch Reactors (some systems are known as 'Living Machines') Eco-Restorers & Fed Batch Reactors are tank based systems that rely on suspended growth treatment, while planted ecologies and geotextile curtains provide additional attached growth treatment surfaces in anoxic, aerobic & anaerobic cycles. Hydraulic retention times are short. Phosphorus treatment is achieved by 'luxury uptake' in the anaerobic cycle. Nitrification of ammonia takes place in the aerobic reactor, while dentrification is handled in the anoxic cycle. Energy requirements are kept low by the use of multiple blowers controlled by oxygen probe activation of variable frequency drives. These systems are ideal for urban applications, within buildings, or where space is limited. These are natural systems which are ideal for small-scale treatments systems or where there are no land restrictions. They are cost effective to install and simple and inexpensive to run. They do however take up larger areas of land than Restorers.
